The Nicolino Building

Built in 1925. Marcello Nicolino purchased the Continental Oil Company on the corner and the Reno property, razed the old Reno home, and built a two-story brick structure on the site. In July, Dawson and Dawson opening the first "serve yourself cash grocery," on the first floor of the building. Offices and apartments were located on the second floor. In 1928 a Piggley-Wiggley Grocery Store took a five-year lease on the building. Marcello Nicolino, owner of the building, built an addition on the west side for the Piggley-Wiggley Meat Market. Some time between 1933 and 1938, this store became Arvada's first Safeway.
